On Tuesday afternoon, Director of Athletics Josh Moon announced the appointment of Doug Gottlieb as the 10th head coach in Green Bay men’s basketball history. An introductory press conference is scheduled for Wednesday, May 15th at the Kress Events Center.
“It is an honor beyond measure to be named the 10th Men’s Basketball coach in UWGB history. I would like to thank Chancellor Mike Alexander and Josh Moon for this incredible opportunity,” said Gottlieb. He expressed his excitement about returning to Wisconsin and invited everyone to join him in making Green Bay Basketball a family affair.
Gottlieb, renowned for his broadcasting career, brings with him a wealth of experience as a player, commentator, analyst, and coach in the basketball world. Currently, he hosts the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio and All Ball, a podcast covering major stories across college basketball and the NBA.
“We are thrilled to welcome Doug Gottlieb to be the next Head Coach of our Men’s basketball program,” said UW-Green Bay Chancellor. The Chancellor praised Gottlieb's energy, passion for the game, desire to mentor student-athletes, and belief in the people of this region.
Gottlieb's illustrious career began at Notre Dame where he led his team in assists, steals, and minutes played during his Freshman year. He later transferred to Golden West College (GWC), where he received an Associate of Arts in business before moving on to Oklahoma State University under Head Coach Eddie Sutton. His impressive performance there earned him numerous accolades including being named All-Big 12 honorable mention twice and leading the nation in assists.
After his college playing career ended, Gottlieb embarked on a successful professional career with stints all across the globe including USA, Israel, Russia, and France. He also won a gold medal as MVP for Team USA at the 2001 Maccabiah Games and later returned as a coach, leading the US to another gold medal in Jerusalem.
“We are thrilled to welcome Doug as the next leader of Phoenix Basketball,” said Director of Athletics Josh Moon. He noted that Gottlieb's coaching pedigree, combined with his esteemed playing career, made him an excellent choice for the role.
Gottlieb started his broadcasting career in 2002, co-hosting a midday sports talk show on an Oklahoma City radio station. He then moved on to ESPN Radio’s GameNight in 2003, eventually becoming a regular host and contributing to SportsCenter and ESPN/ESPN2 games. In 2012, he transitioned to CBS Sports before moving to Fox Sports in 2017.
